In the 1930s, a group of architects and designers began to discard the popular Art Nouveau style of the time and set off down the experimental, avant-garde path of modernism, developing new technologies from the perspectives of function and production, bringing new materials and architectural materials into the home setting, and focusing their attention on schools, apartment buildings, and other shared living environments. The extreme attitudes on ornamentation held by most modernist architects of the time were not warmly received by the public, but with the passage of time, modernism has become the most ubiquitous style, with people happily employing anti-decorative approaches to decorating their living environments, and bringing objects originally from collective environments into private space to magnify the decorative aspects of architectural elements.

“Modernism is a super general idea and means different things in different fields architecture, art literature ect. However, in the design and architecture world, unlike the other fields and movements, it has morphed and became completely globally ubiquitous, for better and worse. We use a certain modernist logic in our work, functional premises and materials, but take them to a new invented rationality, like decoratively carving rotting aluminium box sections.,” says European design duo Soft Baroque.

As one of the hottest design studios today, Soft Baroque uses its unique approach to cast doubt on material culture and to create furniture that straddles the line between art and design. Their forms reference classics of the modernist cannon from the Vienna Succession to Josef Hoffmann. On a foundation of recognizability, they develop unique techniques and traces of workmanship to bring ordinary materials to entirely new places, giving rise to a new form of ornamentation. The interplay and rebellion between modern and contemporary, and shifts in values throughout this history, beckon us to ponder what design truly means today. The Historical Present exhibition is an exploration of ornamentation and value. Let us listen to the dialogue between innovators who have stood apart from the trends and defied convention throughout history, and how their voices have stood up to the test of time.
